Jeel Al-Amal School

This is a school for orphans. They look after about 100 boys and some girls. There was one boy who was deformed and apparently was just carried from room to room by his parents, not cared for and treated as a baby. The parents could not have been ignorant of his disabilities because one was a doctor and the other a teacher! But still he was left without teaching or love (until he came to this school).

 The Sahhar family came to Bethany in 1972, at first renting a room to set up their first orphanage to accommodate ten children. But children were being brought to them all the time and soon they bought a piece of land and, to their surprise, found the land was registered as ‘the land of Jesus’.

They entered the present buildings of the orphanage and school in the mid 1980's and today the Boys Home accommodates 95 boarders with another 80 children coming to the school each day.

The children are largely from poor families and no fees are charged. Many past pupils have gone on to be doctors, architects and lawyers, many have established families of their own and many return for parties and celebrations. ‘This is their home, this is where they grew up’.

Future Plans - Lazarus Home for Girls in Bethany

The school are committed to raising sufficient funds to purchase the land adjacent to the boys' home on which to build a new home - the Lazarus Home.

The school has seen so many girls who have experienced only fear, pain and hunger in their lives. Their lives could have been so different if only were properly looked after and cared for in a home like the Jeel Al-Amal school and boys home.
